The Tear Duct-Part 2

At Em's 18 month well baby check-up, the dr. said if her gunky and red eye didn't clear up with this round of antibiotics, he would refer her back to the opthalmologist.  Well guess what!  Last week, Em visited her dr. AND the opthalmologist - diagnosis is she will have to have another procedure (surgery) on her eye.

This time they will probe through the tear duct again, as it has healed over and clogged again from the first surgery.  Then they will thread a small tube through the tear duct in the eye and down the nose.  An ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) dr. will be involved this time as well.  The ends of the tube in the inner eye will be tied together and we are told she won't even know they are there (we'll see how that goes) and the end of the tube in the nose will be further up the nose, so as to not bother her either.

The goal is for the tear duct to heal around the tube and then remove the tube in 3-4 months.  We are told this is a common procedure that has been done many times and is the next step after the initial tear duct probing fails.

This week brings the pre-op appointments with the opthalmologist and ENT dr. to go over the procedure and receive our "orders".  The procedure is scheduled for Monday, February 27 - first one of the morning.  Here's hoping for an unclogged tear duct in our future!
